New camera, and just not getting the results you expect?
Or just want to take your photography to the next level?
We can help!
Dave and Melani are using their almost 30 years of combined professional and commercial photography experience
to help others improve their photography.
We offer a course that consists of six two and a half hour workshops, limited to a maximum of 6
people. Topics covered include lighting and correct exposure, composition, black & white, still
life, sports, portraiture and landscape photography. However, the schedule and content of the course
is very flexible, and is tailored to the needs and wants of the individual attendees. We do not care
what kind of camera you use, whether it is a 35mm film point and shoot, or the latest digital single
lens reflex. We only ask two things - first, that your camera has some degree of manual control
(aperature or shutter priority, or full manual) in addition to full auto or program, and second,
that you have a genuine desire to improve your photography.
For the first workshop session, we ask that you bring along no more than six of your photographs
(prints or digital). Some of these should be photographs that you like, some that you think need
improvement. Also, we will ask you what areas of photography you are interested in, and in what areas
you feel your photography is in need of improvement. From this, we will tailor the subsequent workshops
to the needs of the group.
Each subsequent workshop will cover a particular topic, which will be discussed at length, with the
emphasis on practical examples. At the end of each workshop, a task will be set (yes, there is homework!).
Between workshops, you will shoot some pictures according to the task brief, then bring a selection of
these with you to the next workshop. We'll discuss the results, while giving positive feedback on any
areas that could still be improved. Then we will move on the that session's scheduled topic and its
"homework" task.
In addition, we will always be available to answer your individual questions, either on the workshop
evenings, or by e-mail at any time. Perhaps you have some specific questions about choice of film, proper
setup of a digital photo for best quality printing, or some aspect of using Photoshop. We will answer any
question as best we can, or if you need any more information, point you in the right direction to find it.
At the end of the course, you will choose the best picture you have taken during the course. We will
print it to a maximum of A3+ (329mm x 483mm, 13" x 19") on our Epson Photo 2100 printer using Ilford Galerie
Smooth Gloss paper, ready for you to have framed. Additional services are available to course attendees at
10% off our standard prices.
In 2005, we are running 4 courses. Three of these are our standard Thursday evening courses, 19:00 to
21:30, running for a period of six weeks. This allows the weekend to complete the homework tasks. In
addition, we are running a special 3 week course (Monday and Thursday evenings) for schoolkids aged 12 to
18, to coincide with the July/August school holidays. Parents, give the kids something to do this summer.
And don't worry, you are welcome to come along too, have a cup of tea or coffee and chat with the other parents,
while we keep your kids occupied for a couple of hours!
Dates for 2005 are as follows:
May 19, 26, June 2, 9, 16, 23.
July 18, 21, 25, 28, August 1, 4 (schoolkids (12 - 18 yrs) special).
September 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, October 6.
November 3, 10, 17, 24, December 1, 8.
